When she started creating this hand-knotted rug, her husband was ill, and the initial patterns she wove were blurred and chaotic, mirroring her anxiety. As time went on and her emotional state shifted, her work transformed into a vibrant portrayal of her daily life and devotion. She began incorporating motifs that were significant to her routine of caring for her husband. The rug features a variety of fruits she would buy for him each day, including water chestnuts, pineapples, and even a tender coconut with a straw. These elements symbolize her care and the small, comforting acts she performed to support him. In addition to the fruit motifs, the rug is adorned with a myriad of flowers that Santosh would pluck to brighten her husband’s days and uplift his spirits. The presence of peacock feathers further highlights her affection for peacocks who come to visit her home every evening. Santosh Devi has infused this Manchaha with her love and devotion, making it a cherished symbol of her emotional journey. She named the creation “Lagan,” which means “Devotion,” capturing the essence of her heartfelt commitment.
