Phulkariyaan
Gurpreet is a warm-hearted weaver, known for his cheerful spirit and the quiet pride he carries for two things—his love for gardening and his passion for weaving. But beyond the loom and his little plants, lives a deeper part of him that often surfaces when he speaks about his home, Punjab. It’s always a tender moment when Gurpreet talks about his homeland. His eyes light up as he paints vivid pictures of the vast mustard fields stretching under open skies. “For generations,” he says, “these fields have fed us, kept us standing.” Gurpreet lives far from home now, and he misses it deeply. Through his Manchaha rug, he finds his way back home. The design form through memory, bringing to life the landscapes of Punjab, the golden mustard blooms, and the feeling of standing barefoot in the field. One of the most heartfelt elements in his rug is the bold phulkari medallions, inspired by his mother’s chunari (drape), he misses watching her stitch, softly humming old folk songs. Inside those medallions, he weaves stories: flower pots he lovingly tends, the fields and the delicate yellow flowers of the Babool tree that dotted the edge of their village. Gurpreet often says he feels proud of how the things he holds close, get permanent into art. This rug is his way of holding on to home, of turning memory into beauty, and bringing the soul of Punjab to your home.
