Basti
For Durga Devi and her daughter Sumitra, weaving has always been a way of telling stories. As they began this rug, they started with familiar traditional patterns, arranging them in layered bands across the surface. Gradually, the rug unfolded into memories of home. The huts woven across the lower half of the rug are inspired by the village street where they live. Among them are two huts placed side by side, representing Durga Devi's home and her sister's home, a small detail that carries a deeply personal memory. As the rug grew, the two weavers began filling different sections on their own. They never discussed what each would weave next. Instead, each trusted her own instinct, allowing the composition to come together naturally. Durga Devi added a matka near the centre, while Sumitra wove a pattern inspired by the bedsheets in their home. Though each section carries a different thought, they come together effortlessly, reflecting the quiet understanding between a mother and daughter who have spent years weaving side by side. At the end, they named the rug “Basti,” referring to the colony in their village.
