Goonj (Echo) is a canvas of whispers from Hardoi. Rajeshkumari, Ranjana, and Soni from Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh, have crafted a rug that defies traditional storytelling. Their creation speaks through abstract patterns, layered textures, and irregular motifs, a visual symphony of chaos and rhythm. There’s a fluidity in the design that evokes imagery of fields swaying in the wind, crisscrossing footpaths, or even hints of folk embroidery passed down through generations. Each line and form feels like a secret, woven intuitively rather than planned, creating a diary without words filled with fragmented memories and emotions. The weavers wanted to create something only they could fully understand, challenging viewers to decipher the meaning themselves. Their Manchaha masterpiece challenges tradition and celebrates ambiguity and creativity.
