Wall Art, Dida – Ivory Coast, 1960 The Dida people of Ivory Coast features a warm palette of mushroom brown and bright yellow, worked in a bold grid of rectangular motifs. The surface shows layered, hand-applied patterns where repetition creates rhythm, while subtle variations bring texture and depth. Borders are softened into the overall design, blending tonal shifts of dark and light that frame the central panels naturally. The Dida are renowned for their resist-dyed textiles, where pigments and hand-applied methods yield abstract yet organic designs. This work embodies their tradition of merging functionality with aesthetic expression, making each piece both cultural artifact and modern art form.
