In Exposed Spine, Neeraj Patel transforms the architectural line, mutating weightless digital blueprints into monumental, volumetric infrastructures of wool and thread. Developed in collaboration with Jaipur Rugs, this body of work marks a decisive departure from the clinical precision of Patel’s signature low-relief paper cuts and CAD coordinates, steering his practice into the visceral terrain of ancestral craft. The ‘exposed spine’ represents both a structural reality and a conceptual unveiling. By subverting the traditional boundaries of the rug, introducing dramatic, pile heights, intentional structural gaps, and cascading vertical fringes, the artworks cease to be flat surfaces and become living architectural fragments. They mimic the skeletal frameworks of abandoned foundries, the corrosive textures of post-industrial ruins, and the rhythmic, physical tension of the loom itself. Importantly, the title addresses the ethics of co-production. The spine is the locus of labour; by exposing it, Patel lays bare the collective time and generational wisdom of the artisans. Forgoing individual artistic autonomy for a distributed, dialogical agency, Patel enters the community not as an extracting explorer, but as a guest who adapts and reimagines to introduce a new material logic of warp and weft. Largely, Exposed Spine reveals that the expanded line does not merely describe space, it unravels the hidden labour weaving our material future
