City Story
Kerman: A Timeless Weaving Legacy from Southern Persia
Kerman has been a distinguished center of Persian rug production since the 16th century. Revered for its finely hand-knotted structure, harmonious palettes of ivory, rose, indigo, and soft peach. Kerman emerged as a key source of some of Iran’s most artistically ambitious carpets. In the 19th century, many master artisans relocated to the nearby village of Laver, giving rise to the renowned Laver Kirmans—celebrated for their wool, delicate botanical motifs, and extraordinary craftsmanship.
Some of the commonly found design features in Kerman rugs include medallions, flowing all-over floral patterns, and Tree of Life compositions. Kerman weavers expertly balance color, form, and space, often incorporating influences from French and European textiles. Their use of luminous palettes and intricate detailing reflects deep artistic refinement. Vase carpets feature monumental urns bursting with stylized blossoms, while rare pictorial rugs with the spirit of Persian decorative tradition.
