Design Story
An Antique Heriz Rug, Northwest Iran, 1920 Dated 1920, this antique Heriz rug, an impressive 9'9" x 12'9", was hand-knotted in Northwest Iran and features a prominent central medallion. The striking poppy-red field provides a bold backdrop for the motifs. The medallion is articulated with strong geometric lines in midnight navy and lighter blue tones, accented with stylized floral forms. Complementary geometric patterns fill the surrounding field, creating a sense of movement and visual rhythm. A deep midnight navy main border frames the composition with repeating floral and palmette motifs, while the inner and outer guard borders display smaller geometric designs, completing the harmonious ensemble.

City Story
In Northwest Iran’s Heriz region, near Mount Sabalan’s volcanic slopes, weavers have long produced some of the most distinctive rugs in the Persian tradition. Local sheep graze on mineral-rich pastures, yielding strong, lustrous wool ideal for rugs that endure for generations. Hand-knotted with the Persian (asymmetrical) knot, Heriz rugs feature bold stepped medallions, often star or diamond shaped, set against fields of angular vines, stylized florals, palmettes, and the classic Herati motif. Until the mid-20th century, natural vegetable dyes gave these rugs deep, warm tones; later, synthetic dyes expanded the palette without losing their vivid character. Rich reds, deep blues, soft ivories, and earthy ochres dominate, framed by wide borders of rosettes, palmettes, and scrolling vines, with guard stripes in smaller repeats. Their marriage of bold geometry, vibrant color, and lasting craftsmanship makes each Heriz rug a timeless work of art.
