Turkmen Teke Rug, circa 1960, 2'6" x 5'6" This compact Turkmen weaving displays a rose petal field set with a column of large Teke guls. Each gul, outlined in medieval blue, carries hooked and cruciform motifs within, a signature feature of the Teke tribal design. The rhythmic arrangement of these octagonal medallions reflects the balance and order central to Turkmen weaving. The rug is framed by layered borders of geometric motifs in rose, blue, and ivory, including diagonal lattice patterns and small diamond devices. The strong contrast of the rose ground with deep blue ornamentation, along with the distinctive large guls, identifies this piece as belonging to the Teke tradition, one of the most renowned groups of Turkmen tribes.
