Durga Devi learned the art of weaving from her mother-in-law, Kanta Devi. Today, the two continue to weave Manchahas together, sharing ideas and building each design one motif at a time. When they received the yarns for this rug, they noticed that the colours were softer and lighter than what they usually worked with. Embracing the palette, they filled the Manchaha with their signature diagonal mountain forms, weaving them alongside flowers, plants, and bandarwal—the decorative hangings that adorn the doors and entrances of their home during festivals. While talking about these motifs, Durga Devi shared that all the festive decorations are carefully stored in a ‘potli', a cloth bundle that is opened only during celebrations. Inside are years of decorations, ready to transform the home for every festival. As they looked at the finished rug, filled with decorative patterns and celebratory motifs, it reminded them of that treasured bundle. They named the Manchaha Potli—a collection of memories, traditions, and decorations, carefully woven together into one carpet.
