DostiTwo close friends Somnath and Jivan, began the rug by dividing it into two distinct halves, not out of rivalry, but to give each other equal space to explore their imagination. Somnath took the right side, choosing to break away from tiny, intricate motifs by transforming traditional patterns into bold, eye-catching designs. Meanwhile, Jivan stayed true to his signature style of scattered motifs and shifting patterns that seemed to flow with spontaneity. As the rug progressed, they noticed the stark division. Though both sides were strong in their own ways, it felt incomplete, like two stories being told separately. Worried that viewers might misread it as a work of rivalry, they decided to unify their canvas. In the upper mid-section, they “shook hands”, weaving a gentle, uniform wavy pattern that symbolized their coming together. Along with that, came a twist. It was summer, and the fan installed above the loom was positioned more toward Somnath’s side. When Jivan complained about the heat, Somnath offered him his seat. This simple act led to a delightful shift in the design—the styles swapped sides. What started on the left now moved to the right, and vice versa. Their Manchaha is like a woven conversation between two souls. Fittingly, they named this rug “Dosti” (Friendship), a tribute to their bond.
