Genie
Inside the stillness of the jail walls, a loom comes to life, guided by the hands and hearts of three weavers—Mahesh, Karu, and Nanu. Together, they wove a Manchaha that defied the limitations of color, using only shades of black, grey, and ivory. Yet from this muted palette emerged a rug bursting with imagination, purpose, and unexpected beauty. Mahesh, the quiet visionary of the trio, led the design. A natural-born artist and a lover of colors, he often says, “It's a play of colors... things start to create themselves.” Under his guidance, Karu and Nanu learned to see beyond threads. They learned to tell stories, to play with form, and to weave thoughts. But what sets their Manchaha apart is a striking and unexpected motif—a floating Genie in the top-left corner of the rug. This was Mahesh’s idea, drawn from his fascination with the story of Aladdin. He believes that genies aren’t just magical beings from fairy tales, they are metaphors for life’s truths. “Genies teach you beautiful lessons,” Mahesh says. “About making the right choices.” Running through the rug are different winding paths, woven in black, which Mahesh explains with poignant simplicity: “Yeh sadak hai… jo jaati hai galat yaa sahi. Ab andhera khule yaa ujaala rahe, dhekho kismat mein kya hai likha.” This line beautifully encapsulates a philosophy of life: Life is a road filled with uncertain turns. You may choose paths that are right or wrong, but ultimately, what unfolds—light or darkness—rests in destiny’s hands.
