Safarnama
A group of four weaver artists, confined within the walls of a prison, let their imaginations roam free. They created "Safarnama" (The Account of Travel), a metaphorical travel journal that envisions their dreams of going on a road trip together. Through the collaborative act of weaving on the same loom, the weavers formed a deep friendship. Kamlesh began by depicting the lush fields of his village, clear skies, and the vibrant festival of kites, which he portrayed on the bottom left of the rug. As he shared his memories, the others began to long for their own homes. Jagdish contributed cotton plants and sugarcane stalks that grew near his house. The three included diamond motifs, known as “Choukadi,” in their design. This motif is a traditional element found in Rajasthani homes, where square shapes adorned with geometric symbols are placed in the central courtyard, or aangan, which also became the centerpiece of their rug. The bottom half of the rug was filled with nostalgic memories of their homes. In contrast, the upper half shifted to a world of imagination and travel. They wove buildings and, most amusingly, created a train on which four helicopters stand—one for each of them! They playfully gave the train a face and laughed about it a lot. They beautifully titled the rug "Safarnama," a visual representation of their dreams to explore the world together.
