Gulshan
‘Gulshan’ (garden) was made during Diwali, the Indian festival of lights. Diwali marks the spiritual victory of light over darkness and good over evil. Harji and Kishan faced certain adversities in life but just as lamps light up the night during Diwali, ‘Gulshan’ brought a sense of enlightenment and brightened their paths. They used the red color as the base which they mentioned was their favorite color and used a lot of lehariya (wavy) patterns. The color red signifies courage and determination, the two artisans ended up in jail but have the resilience in them that they will overcome this phase. They shared that after returning to their cells from work, they spent time talking about their families and stories about their early life. Sometimes when they missed their families, they used to incorporate things that reminded them of their families in their weaving. Kishan weaved a belan, reminding him of his wife’s hand-cooked meal. ‘Gulshan,’ as the name suggests, truly bought a garden of happiness for both artisans.
