Santosh Devi is used to working with traditional bright colours, so this colour palette pushed her curiosity in a new direction. When she sat at the loom, unsure of where to begin, her mind went back to the day she saw a tortoise for the first time. That memory became the starting point of her rug. At the centre, she wove a large medallion that feels like a maze, and inside it, she has woven a round motif. To her, this medallion is her open front yard where her young son and daughter play every evening. Her son often loses his ball there, and the whole family ends up searching for it together. In the inner medallion, she added the stars and moon she sees clearly from that same yard on nights. Above the medallion, she placed two ‘kalash’ (sacred earthen pots) woven in her own distinct way. Toward the top, she finished the rug with butterflies and leaves, motifs that often return in her work. After finishing the carpet, she named her rug “Aangan”, meaning “Frontyard.”

• If spills occur, blot immediately. Do not rub the stain.
• Rotate occasionally to equalize wear.
• Use protectors under the legs of heavy furniture to avoid flattening and piling.
• If thread comes out do not pull the yarn, trim with scissor.
