Deeply devotional and kind, Ram Devi is calm yet incredibly creative. When she saw her favorite blue yarns for this rug, she was thrilled. The very next day, she eagerly began weaving with a joyful heart. When her daughter, Riya, asked what she was creating, Ram Devi playfully said that her favorite colors would go well with her designs of her favorite sarees! From Bandhej (tie and dye) to Leheriya (traditional waves), Ram Devi filled the rug with various patterns reflecting her love for sarees. Midway through, she noticed that the rug was beginning to resemble an evening sky, so she added motifs of stars and clouds to enhance the effect. Seeing the finished piece, the gentle Ram Devi named her rug “Neel Gagan,” meaning “Blue Sky.”
