Gaon Ka Naksha
Archana and Shalini often wonder how people in the city use Google Maps to travel everywhere. They find it unusual how people don’t even know who lives beside them in the tall buildings and closed flats. At the same time, they proudly reflect on how everyone in the villages is connected. As youngsters, they dream of going to the cities one day but want to capture the authentic, raw beauty of their village forever. This Manchaha rug they wove serves as a visual map of their town. Once you explore their map, you’ll discover many small, literal representations from their village. The map features many boxes, each with a unique element. Starting with terracotta pot cluster designs that illustrate how villagers gather for water and areas for cows and buffaloes near every home, along with playful elements like toys and paper boats representing the children at play in open grounds. Many random scattered patterns shows the presence of mischievous monkeys that swing from the trees! There are elements from the ancient temples that have stood for generations. Archana and Shalini wove a unique highlight—their own home in the shiniest of yarns, showing the place where their loom stands, where their imagination takes flight, where their dreams come true. They lovingly named their rug Gaon ka Naksha (Map of the Village)—a tender tribute to the soul of their village.
