Jeevan Ka Naksha
A sister trio, Shushma, Babli, and Komal, set out to create their very first Manchaha rug. What began as a nervous attempt soon transformed into a joyful and deeply personal artistic journey. As they unfolded the bundle of yarns, a palette of light beige tones greeted them. But it was the vibrant, bold colors that caught their eye. They knew instantly from where to begin with. They sat together, reminiscing and planning. “Baina,” Komal suddenly exclaimed—referring to the beautiful hand-crafted fans they make to beat the humid heat of Uttar Pradesh during power cuts. These fans are delicate and decorative, woven with intricate patterns and so the same came on the loom. Though hesitant at first, their fear faded with each knot. They'd realized that even if there were mistakes, they were not failures, but experiences. Every thread became a timestamp of their emotions, thoughts, and conversations. The loom turned into a playground. They swapped places while weaving, ensuring that each section of the rug had its own distinct character. Shushma, the eldest, brought steadiness; Babli, the middle sister, brought rhythm; and Komal, the youngest and most talkative, always took the center, her chatter balancing the quiet focus of the other two. Outside of weaving, the sisters are farmers. Their life in the fields found its way onto the canvas. Wavy patterns mirrored the curves of their land. Iron wires used to protect crops from monkeys became design motifs. Even corn, their primary crop made an appearance. They often preserve corn by stringing it into garlands, sometimes hanging them above the loom as decoration. That too became part of the visual language of their rug. To the sisters, the finished piece felt like a map of their lives, woven in threads of memory and meaning. With pride and love, they named it, “Jeevan Ka Naksha” — The Map of Life.
