For this rug, Durga Devi and her daughter Sumitra gradually discovered a new way of expressing their surroundings. While they are both experienced weavers, moving away from familiar motifs encouraged them to observe nature differently and translate it through texture, colour, and movement. They began with small diamond patterns, a form that came naturally to them from years of weaving. Slowly, scattered dots found their way into the composition, adding rhythm and depth. They then wove the mountains that surround their village, drawing from a landscape they see every day. Towards the end of the rug, they imagined something they had never seen in real life—an ocean. Durga Devi shared that although she has never visited the sea, she often wondered what it would look and feel like. Using layered textures and flowing shades of blue, the mother-daughter duo created an ocean from imagination rather than memory. The rug brings together the familiar and the unknown, blending lived experiences with quiet curiosity. At the end, they named the Manchaha “Kalpana,” meaning “Imagination”.
